Kosi River- Overview

Kosi Barrage River is India’s popular river that flows from Tibet, Nepal, and India. It drains from the northern slopes of the Himalayas in Tibet, and southern slopes in Nepal. It is known as Saptkoshi due to its seven upper tributaries – Tamor River Tamor River, Arun River, Sun Kosi, Dudh KoshiBhote KoshiTamakoshi RiverLikhu Khola, and Indravati

The Kosi River is 720 km (450 mi) long and drains an area of about 74,500 km2 (28,800 sq mi) in Tibet, Nepal and Bihar. 

Its unstable nature has been attributed to the heavy silt it carries during the monsoon season, and flooding in India has extreme effects. Fishing is an important enterprise on the river but fishing resources are being depleted and youth are leaving for other areas of work

About Kosi Barrage, Ramnagar

Kosi Barrage in Ramnagar is the establishment of Dam over Ramnagar’s Kosi River. Kosi Barrage is the lifeline for the population lives in this small town, wildlife lives in the forest of Ramnagar and Corbett National Park’s wildlife and floral species.

Kosi Barrage is 54.25 meters long barrage that is constructed across the Kosi River to provide drinking water about to 30 thousand population in nearby areas of Ramnagar. They supply water through pipelines to storage and then provide drinking water after filters. Uttarakhand Irrigation Department supplies water from Kosi Berrag into different Canals for irrigation in nearby destinations including Dhela, Jhirna, Tanda, Garjiya, Dhikuli, Chhoi, and more.
